Policy
for International Electives
The
International Electives' Program at the Institute is an
"Observational Experience" where applicants
are not allowed to actually touch patients; however, participants
in the program have a rich opportunity to gather knowledge
of tropical diseases and local health problems, with a
basic insight into modern and Indian systems of health
care. The duration of the program is a minimum of 4 uninterrupted
weeks; therefore applicants are requested to make personal
travel plans before or after their elective experience.
Important
components of the International Elective Program are
as follows:
1.
The program is purely an observational program under the
guidance of an assigned faculty mentor. (No Hands On Responsibilities)
2. Duration of the program is usually four weeks unless
the Institute has approved a different time period.
3. Applicants may attend the following with prior approval
from their mentor: lectures, tutorials, clinical rounds,
medical camps, and other hospital activities.
4. The Dress Code for applicants is as follows:
Completed
applications need to be received by the Institute at least
three months prior to the start of the program in the
given application format along with all required documents.

II.
Insurance:
The
applicant needs to submit proof of personal International
Medical Insurance along with the application. The proof
of coverage needs to be in English or a translated copy
duly attested by the Dean/Authorized signatory of their
Medical School/College.
III.
Fees and charges:
Accommodation
Rs.15,000 per month. Food charges Rs. 5,000 per month
(which includes bed tea, breakfast, lunch, evening tea
and dinner. Only vegetarian meals are served.)
Pick-up from and dropping Rs. 1,000 (from Haridwar,
Dehradun, or Jolly Grant Airport)Visits
to Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussorie and Dehradun on weekends
can be arranged on nominal payments.
In the event an applicant decides not to join the program,
notification should be given to the Institute at least
one month prior to commencement of their program. If
an applicant decides not to continue in the program,
ninety percent of the remaining fees/remittances shall
be refunded after deducting transaction, postage and
other incidental expenses, if applicable.
IV.
Proficiency in English Language:
Evidence
of English Language skills like TOEFL, IELTS or any other
examination in the English Language needs be sent along
with the completed application for applicants from non-English
speaking countries.
V.
Letters of Reference: (Section B of the application
form)
A letter of reference from the applicant's College/School
is required to be submitted. The Reference letter needs
to be completed and signed by the Dean/Authorized signatory
of the applicant's College/School.
VI.
Proof of Academic Standing
Applicants need to provide proof of good academic standing
from approved Universities/Colleges in their respective
countries.
VII.
Certificate of Immunization:
A certificate of immunization needs to be signed by
the applicant's College/School official and submitted
with the application.

Letter of Selection:
A letter of selection will be sent to applicants and
their University/College approximately 2 month prior
to commencement of the program. The applicant needs
to bring this letter to the Institute, as it will serve
as an identity card for joining the program.
VIII.
Institute policies:
The applicant is required to abide by the rules and
regulations of the Institute. Violation of any of the
institute's policy may result in immediate withdrawal
from the program. The Institute's policies will be explained
in detail on arrival and from time to time by the applicant's
coordinator.
IX.
Certification of Completion:
On successful completion of the program, the Institute
will issue a certificate to the applicant after all
rerequisites are completed. Prerequisites may include
a terminal assessment and clearance of all dues at the
end of the program.
X.
The Program Coordination Team:
The Coordinator of the Department of Medical Education
and the Director of Nursing Education and Nursing Service
are responsible for all international electives. They
assign a specific mentor from the faculty to the applicant
upon admission to the program. Applicants are requested
to seek guidance and take instructions from their designated
program mentor only.
